random poetry rant
Sep. 18th, 2018 10:41 pmaye,, this is random and nobody will read this (ofc bc I don't have any friends on here anyways lol) but i just want to rant abt poetry n stuff (mainly insta poetry) bc i don't wanna spam my twitter tl and/or my irl friends with bs nobody cares abt lmao
so basically what pisses me off is that, there are so much shit "poems" out there on instagram getting traction and stuff and i wanna die bc it makes me cringe so much :,) don't get me wrong, poetry posted on instagram isn't inherently bad. I'm a strong believer that good poetry can be shared whenever, whereever without the platform used to share it lowering its artistic quality one bit. HOWEVER, going by that logic, bad poetry will always be bad regardless of if its traditionally published or posted online (cough) rupi kaur (cough) and I'm just categorizing these shit poems as "instagram poetry" bc idk that's just the impression I get when i hear the phrase. hence, why I wanna rant bc they suck :,)
because, srsly. a lot of these "poems" are even poems. if you asked me what a "real poet" is, I'd tell you that a "real poet" is someone who uses literary devices, stanza structure and form, language and strong imagery to shape their words in order to convey an emotion or experience in a unique and strong way. The problem with instagram poets is that none of them do this-- NONE. all their "poems" are just common phrases or some tumblr-esque deep shit formatted in a way that looks poetic, but isn't really. Once, i legit saw this poem that just went:
In the end
she chose
H E R S E L F
(I'm not even kidding)
Like, this is just a sentence?????? like it's so vague, first of all. like who's "herself"? who are you talking about? what did she had to choose from? WHY did she have to choose? how and what did she feel when making this decision or before or after? like there's so many questions, and you can't answer ANY of them bc you don't get anything from the poem at all.
And this leads me to my next point: how relatable all these poems are. like i mentioned, the "poem" is so VAGUE. this "herself" the poem is talking about can represent any living, breathing human out there that identify as female bc of how unspecific this experience. its like, these "poets" are just pandering to an audience they know will eat this shit up just for the sake of it and not for the art idk. I wanna give them the benefit of the doubt, that they really just writing stuff like this for self expression/art but then again, if that's the case, i kinda feel bad bc it still sucks sdkfsofks
all in all, if insta "poetry" is what gets you off like you do you num 'sayin but,,,,, u can enjoy something while still acknowledging that it sucks y'kno. just saying :-)
